Athens Day-Charter Itinerary Through the Saronic Gulf

Departing from Alimos Marina, this single-day route covers roughly 50 nautical miles and visits five distinct stops between the Athenian coast and the island of Hydra.

Itinerary

From the port outwards

  1. 01

    09:00 · Cast off — Alimos Marina

Board at Alimos, meet the skipper and hostess, and review the day's routing over coffee on the aft deck. Early departure avoids midday traffic in the marina channel and positions you at the first anchorage before the breeze builds. Stow bags below and settle into the saloon or the foredeck sun pad.

  2. 02

    10:30 · Swim stop — Metopi Islet

Drop anchor off the rocky shelf of Metopi, a low islet between Aegina and the mainland. Depth is 4–6 metres over sand, ideal for snorkelling without a current. The crew sets up the swim platform and serves chilled fruit. Spend 45 minutes in the water before weighing anchor toward Aegina.

  3. 03

    13:00 · Waterfront lunch — Aegina Town

Med-moor stern-to along the Aegina harbour wall, within sight of the fish market. Walk 30 metres to the quayside tavernas for grilled octopus and local pistachio salad. Lunch here works best before 14:00, when tables fill with ferry-day visitors. Allow 90 minutes ashore.

  4. 04

    15:30 · Cultural stop — Hydra harbour

Motor south to Hydra, roughly 20 nautical miles from Aegina. No cars operate on the island, so the harbour is quiet enough to hear donkey hooves on stone. Walk up to the Historical Archives Museum or simply circle the amphitheatre-like waterfront. The tender can drop you at the inner quay if the main harbour is full.

  5. 05

19:00 · Sunset aperitivo — Bisti Bay, Hydra

Cruise five minutes east to Bisti Bay, where the cliffs face due west. The skipper positions the yacht bow-to-wind for a stable platform. Watch the sun drop behind the Peloponnese shoreline while the hostess serves Aperol spritz and mezze on the flybridge. Depart for Alimos once the light fades, arriving by 21:30.

About Athens

Athens puts you at the threshold of the Saronic Gulf, one of the most rewarding short-range cruising grounds in the eastern Mediterranean. Depart from Alimos Marina or Piraeus and reach the harbour of Aegina in under an hour, the car-free waterfront of Hydra in roughly two, or the quiet pine-fringed coves of Agistri by mid-morning. The core sailing season runs from late April through October, with peak demand between June and September. Distances are forgiving — most day-trip anchorages sit within 30 nautical miles of the home port, so even a half-day yacht charter delivers a full itinerary.

The fleet available for hire here ranges from nimble 10-metre sailing boats suited to couples up to 30-metre-plus motor yachts configured for corporate entertaining. Med mooring is standard in busy harbours like Poros and Hydra town, where stern-to berthing puts you steps from the quay. Sea state in the Saronic stays moderate through summer; the Meltemi winds that buffet the Cyclades rarely exceed Force 4 inside the gulf. Ashore, the fish tavernas along the Hydra waterfront and the pistachio groves of Aegina give each stop a distinct character that no resort itinerary can replicate.

Whether you are planning a couple's escape, a multi-generational family week, or a leadership retreat for twelve, the proximity of so many distinct islands makes Athens ideal for tailored routing. A three-day loop — Aegina, Hydra, Spetses, return — covers roughly 90 nautical miles and three entirely different island cultures.
